Antique G & J Lines Dollhouse #18 c. 1910 Kit's Coty Series English LARGE 31

Antique English dollhouse made by G & J Lines around 1910. This is #18 from the Kit's Coty series. The house is large and heavy, 29" high (not including the tallest chimney), 26 1/2 inches wide, 20" deep. Solid construction makes it weigh over 30 lbs.

The four-room house is wood on the front and litho brick print paper on the sides and back, with litho shingle print paper on the roofs. The paper on the gabled section of the roof, on the right, has been replaced with photo-copied paper identical to the original roof paper.

Fooled me until I noticed a slight difference in color. The paper on the roof above the front door has also been replaced with the nice copy.

The original paper shows some fading here and there with rubs on corners and a few small missing places on edges, but very good for what it is. The white paint on the front has metallic gold pin-striping, and may be, at least, partly original. The arch and keystone above the lower right window has been replaced, done beautifully. The window sill trim, first floor bay window has separated along the front, but not loose. The spindles on the widow's walk and front porch are all there, but some of the porch ones have lost their paint revealing black or gold underneath. All of the glass windows are in the front. The middle lower bay window is cracked all the way down. The front gable has a black painted half-timber look, while the back gable is covered in a stucco-look paper. The front hinges have been replaced. The glass window in the attic is loose.

The roof with the widow's walk lifts off. One of the upstairs rooms has an antique bead and metal light fixture. The interior rooms have been stripped to their original wallpaper. It is tight, but shows lots of discoloration.

Three of the four rooms have their original floor paper, which looks like mottled brown. The fourth has been replaced with something similar. Ceiling on both floors is 10 1/2 inches.

The four fireplaces are original. Lace curtains held with carpet tacks are old, but not likely original. Made from slightly gathered lace yardage installed up and down. The stairway has been added or replaced, or both.

The solid barrier around the stairs on the second floor is older than the stairway, itself. Also, there are doors between the rooms on each floor behind the stairway, both door pieces covered in the corresponding original wallpaper, cut after the paper was installed. No evidence of hinges, so I don't know how they might have been installed. They are not attached now.

I may have over-described the flaws and peculiarities of this house, but it is a stunning, hard to find piece. Apparently they are quite sought-after in England, and even harder to find in the US.
