Set is new in open, damaged box. We have several of these with various damage to the boxes. The boxes were sealed, but we opened them to make sure nothing inside was damaged. The main part of the box that tends to get crushed is where there's mainly just cardboard packaging inside, so none of the set pieces are harmed.
